INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Top quarterback prospects Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward have officially decided not to participate in on-field workouts at this week’s NFL scouting combine.
The decision doesn’t come as a surprise, as both players had previously hinted at skipping the drills. Quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers are scheduled to take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, but Sanders and Ward will sit out — following a growing trend among top-tier quarterbacks.
They join a list of high-profile signal-callers who opted out of combine workouts in recent years, including former No. 1 overall picks Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, and Joe Burrow.
Despite skipping the workouts, Sanders and Ward have extensive college film to showcase their talent. Sanders started over 50 games, first at Jackson State, where he helped revitalize the program under the guidance of his father and coach, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, before transferring to Colorado.
Ward’s college career was equally impressive. He threw an NCAA-record 158 touchdown passes across multiple programs, including Incarnate Word, Washington State, and Miami.
In 2024, Sanders earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Ward was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.
Though they won’t perform at the combine, both quarterbacks are expected to be heavily scouted ahead of the NFL draft, where they could be among the first names called.
